About the Artist

Isabel Oliver - Biography

I grew up amidst the vibrant colors and traditions of a small pueblo outside of Morelia, Mexico.  The famous artisan communities that surround my hometown exposed me to some of the world's most amazing handcrafted creations – arts and crafts that are colorful, intricate, unique and full of local pride.  I enjoyed the art around me,  but I never dreamed that one day I would be creating art myself.

In the 1990's I met an American boy while he was traveling near my hometown. We fell in love, we married and when the time came to start a family, we settled in San Diego, California. I spent the following years at home raising our two amazing daughters and eventually, looking for an activity besides volunteering in their classrooms, I signed up for a weekly "Painting for Adults" class at my local Parks and Rec center. There, I discovered a hobby that would soon become an enduring passion. Now, I paint from my studio at home and I'm happily sharing it with the world.

In sunny San Diego, there is no shortage of art related events and opportunities for community involvement. I am proud to participate in exhibitions and fine art festivals in my area, including the ArtWalk Liberty Station and ArtWalk Little Italy. I am a member of the South Bayfront Artist Association, the Chula Vista Art Guild, Oil Painters of America (OPA), and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society (NOAPS).

My purpose is to continue to learn and grow in my craft, to contribute to my community, and to create artwork that speaks to the viewer.

ABOUT THE ART
I work in several mediums and my main focus is in oil and acrylic on canvas.  I enjoy painting a variety of genres, but I have a deep affection for flowers, fruits and vegetables. Mother Nature's vast diversity and rich colors provide endless inspiration. My husband, who is a chef, actually calls me from the farmer's market, not to ask if I need ingredients for cooking but to suggest the next painting subject.

Painting is a way of preserving the ephemeral. Once set on canvas, fruits and veggies will never spoil and flowers are perpetually in bloom. Through my art I also seek to pay tribute to local farmers and to highlight the pressing need to be aware of and to be connected to our sustainable food sources.

The vibrancy on display at produce and textile markets, the discoveries of travel, and the fleeting moments of everyday life are all emotions that inspire me to create art.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The beautiful thing about the world of art is that it can transport us to a  time and place where nothing has to make sense but at the same time everything is connected.

The creative spirit lives deep within each one of us.  Some will never know it's there, some will proudly showcase it, others will leave this earth wishing they would have had the courage to bring it out.  I didn't know I could paint until I gave myself the chance to try something new.  I hope my art and my story encourage others to do the same.
